ILLUSTRATION
NUVANCE HEALTH
Series of illustrations for Nuvance Health, a chain of hospitals and health centers in Western Connecticut. Each illustration represents a different campus in the health network and was tailored to fit the customer’s needs. They are a combination of traditional drawing in pen and ink and digital watercolors in an innovative vector simulation software that was independently developed at the time and has since been integrated into larger applications like Adobe.
The illustrations were printed on cards to be used for fundraising for their non-profit efforts.

It was impossible not to fall in love with the old-world charm and gripping action of Pedro Mendes’ dynamic compositions. I contacted the Portuguese artist about coloring the book as soon as I came across some of his early drawings online. We instantly became friends and continued to build together on the project.
I sought to highlight everything that I came to love about Pedro’s drawings. Good color should preserve and enhance the graphic elements of the artwork, without obscuring or overpowering them. Soon I found myself contributing to the content, by introducing the arrival of a thunderstorm to Pedro’s careless blue skies. It allowed for pacing the final battle, building suspense, and dramatic variations in the mood and color scheme of each page. The storm also became a vehicle to add meaning to the narrative, turning a string of events into a statement about loss and renewal.
Searching for a way to visually punctuate the ending of the book, a very special year brought a slew of pink rainbows as the sun set on our own family summer adventures. So I thought it would be a great way to end this adventure as well.
Pedro’s drawings and inks needed to be re-proportioned according to the publisher’s format. That often meant edges had to be extended and elements moved into safe areas. For a two-page spread, elements had to be moved or redrawn to avoid critical parts falling on the center seam, while maintaining a visually balanced composition. The fonts used saw some custom edits as well. The paper scrolls, decorative borders, text layout, text pages, title and logo design were also my own contribution.
